Sara blocked the first volley of blows, but managed to turn into the knee that followed. The airborne feeling was mercifully short before he hit the ground.

“Oof!” He blinked up at the ceiling of Nohea’s home gym and tried not to panic while he waited for his lungs to start working again.

Nohea’s face appeared over him. “Get up.”

Was she kidding? He couldn’t breathe.

“You’re dead if you lie there. Get the fuck up.”

He rolled over onto his side.

She tapped a foot none too gently into his ribs, then mimed kicking his face and stomping on his head. “Protect your goddamn head at least. Jesus, Sara, what’s wrong with you?”

“You’ve been training me for months and I still couldn’t get away from Jo-Jo. I’m pretty sure I’m a lost cause. I mean, they weren’t exactly ninja-level opponents.”

“Means you need to train more, not lie on the mat like a dead fish.” Nohea lowered herself onto the floor next to him. “You tried to leave?”

“Yeah. They did something that cut me off from Thad.” He rubbed his chest. It had been cold. Empty. “I tried to leave then. Jo tied me to the bed with her scarf.”

“A scarf?” Nohea snickered. “Well, that explains why the boss sent us over here to train.”

“No. I didn’t tell him that part.”

“Why not?”

Sara stared at the ceiling, avoiding her gaze. “I fucked up when we first met them. I’m trying not to make it worse.” Telling Thad everything would definitely make things worse.

The twins insisted their spell was only for protection, nothing else. Their assurances did nothing to relieve the terror of being cut off from Thad. When Sara had finally broken the circle, there had been an infinitesimal moment between when the last grains of salt parted and the magic of the circle dissipated. In that split second, the void of Thad’s absence stretched like a black hole into eternity. He’d been sure he’d fucked it all up. They were severed, and nothing would reestablish the bond. Then Thad’s presence had crashed back into him, sending him to his knees.

He would do anything not to experience that separation again.

“They do anything else you haven’t mentioned?” Nohea sounded pissed.

“Something with my blood. To do their magic,” he mumbled.

“Shit.” She slapped a hand down on the mat. “And that is why we’re training. They knew they couldn’t get Thad, but you’re almost as good. Vampire blood, only slightly diluted. What did they say it was for?”

“Protection. Sef said Jo knows stuff sometimes. Not like a vision or anything, more a feeling. And she knew they needed me. She said something has been stalking them since Berta died. And then the demons came, so I guess she was right.”

He said all this to the ceiling tiles, afraid if he looked directly at her, he would spill the whole story. Not Thad’s blood, mine. And maybe I’m a demon. And you and Thad kill demons. And I didn’t call it. I didn’t. I didn’t.

“Demons again. Thad wasn’t sure about Berta and Paulie, but he sure pegged that stuff surrounding the house this morning,” Nohea mused.
